What is burnout?
Burnout is the result of a long period of chronic stress without enough recovery. At first,
stress reactions are even helpful; they give you energy and focus. But when there’s no
real balance between tension and rest, your stress system becomes disrupted
Step by step, your recovery capacity decreases. Even when you take breaks or sleep,
your body doesn’t bounce back the way it should. This ongoing strain puts pressure on
your brain and your body. Over time, the stress that once helped you perform turns into
stress that damages you.
The process doesn’t happen overnight. It often starts with fatigue and small signs that
are easy ignored. Then come the difficulties with concentration, memory, and emotions.
Eventually, your system collapses. At that point, even light effort can feel like too much,
and symptoms pile up.
Some of the most common signs of burnout include:
– Constant tiredness
– Problems with focusing, remembering, or thinking clearly
– Sleep disturbances
– Physical complaints
– Emotional changes
Burnout is primarily a physical exhaustion of your stress system. It’s the result of too much stress for too long, combined with too little recovery. The good news is that recovery is possible.
